The event was designed to address longstanding gender imbalances within the finance industry and inspire the next generation of women to consider careers in the sector.
The full-day event gave students the opportunity to engage directly with female finance professionals at various stages of their careers. Through a series of talks, discussions and networking opportunities, students gained valuable insights into what it is like to work as a woman in finance. The programme also included interactive activities led by female academics, providing a taste of the learning and skills required to pursue finance-related degrees and future careers.
The event was coordinated by Gina Murray, Senior Lecturer in Banking, Finance and Accounting, and Steph Chamberlain, an Associate Head in Sheffield Business School. Both previously worked within the finance industry before joining the University. The day was supported by representatives from Aviva, Rathbones, Vanguard, Wilford Smith, the Money and Pensions Service, Brown & Brown, and the Chartered Insurance Institute.
Dr Sandar Win, Head of Division for Finance and Economics at Sheffield Business School, said: “Women in Finance events, which we have delivered for many years, demonstrate Sheffield Hallam University’s commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion. By showcasing diverse role models from the finance industry, we see confidence grow, networks expand, and industry stereotypes fall away. They bring real stories and real inspiration for real change in the finance industry."
Attendees welcomed the opportunity to explore career options, gain insights and advice from industry professionals, network with peers from other schools and colleges, participate in interactive activities, present their ideas, and tour Sheffield Business School.
Sara Hill, who teaches Business at Thomas Rotherham College and brought a group of students, said: "Our students thoroughly enjoyed the day. Having previously studied personal and business finance in the classroom, the experience brought many of the topics to life, deepening their understanding. It also highlighted the wide range of careers in finance and the different pathways into these roles.
“It was particularly valuable for them to engage with female role models in the industry and hear first-hand about their career journeys. Through discussions and interactive activities, students actively listened to others, asked thoughtful questions, and, as a result, further developed both their skills and their understanding of finance, and roles within the industry."

Initiatives like this play a vital role in building confidence, raising aspirations, and supporting greater diversity within the future talent pipeline. By connecting young women with successful role models, industry experts, and academic staff, Women in Finance Day provided students with valuable insight into both finance careers and the range of related degree opportunities available at Sheffield Business School. The day equipped students with the knowledge, confidence and inspiration to explore the many pathways into the sector.
