Specialist Knowledge for Teaching Mathematics (SKTM)
Examining the impact of a professional development programme for non-specialist Key Stage 3 teachers of mathematics that aims to build subject knowledge and pedagogical understanding
The Specialist Knowledge for Teaching Mathematics (SKTM) programme provides professional development for non-specialist teachers of mathematics in Key Stage 3. Designed by National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) and funded by DfE, this SKTM Programme is delivered by accredited Local Leaders of Mathematics Education (LLMEs), through participating Maths Hubs. Non-specialist teachers are those in a state-funded school who have not undertaken Initial Teacher Training in mathematics. The aim of the programme is to improve subject knowledge and pedagogical understanding and is aligned with teaching for mastery principles and DfE’s non-statutory Key Stage 3 guidance.
The evaluation is a two-armed cluster-randomised controlled trial, with randomisation at school level. A total of 77 schools were randomly allocated to either receive SKTM or to the control group which will continue supporting pupils as they would usually in their schools. Control schools will receive £1000 as a thank you for taking part in the evaluation activities, and intervention schools will receive £500. The primary outcome will be the impact of SKTM on mathematics attainment for Y8 pupils at the end of the study year (2025/26).
