Disabilities and medical requirements

If you have a disability, medical requirement or sensory impairment, we try to allocate you the accommodation most suitable for your needs and requirements.

Accommodation for students with disabilities and medical requirements

Demand for adapted accommodation is high and we have limited availability. The sooner you tell us, the more able we'll be to find suitable accommodation for you.

We can offer you:

  • a larger rooms if you need extra space for equipment
  • wheelchair accessible flats
  • rooms for carers, personal assistants or support workers
  • reasonable adaptations to accommodation.

We can also signpost you to further support and services, and help you find alternatives.

Visit our accommodation

Before applying we advise you to visit the University to look round potential accommodation.  This is also your opportunity to tell us what you need and discuss your requirements in more detail.

After a room offer is made to you, we also encourage you to visit your offered accommodation to make sure it’s suitable.

You're welcome to bring along anyone you'd like – such as carers, personal assistants, support workers or anyone who has been involved in your University application.

If you can't bring someone with you or if you are unable to visit us, please let us know and we will advise you.

You can contact us on 0114 2254512 for information about arranging a visit.

Tell us how we can support you

During the application process, you should share your accommodation needs and requirements in the notes section of the form.

Let us know:

  • what your condition is
  • any specific requirements you have
  • anything else that can help us allocate your room.

If you have a disability, we may ask you to complete a short form. This will help us to find the best room possible for you.

Our confidentiality promise

The more information you give us, the better able we will be to support you. But we understand that sharing personal details like your medical condition may be difficult.

We'll keep your information secure and we'll only ever share what's necessary with accommodation providers. This is so they can offer you the support you might need.

If you don't tell us about your disability or medical condition during your application but later disclose it, we may not be able to find the right accommodation for you.

We'll support you throughout your time with us
