Daisy is an Apprentice Software Developer and has been able to take advantage of the opportunity to get real-life experience working in the software industry at DeeperThanBlue in Sheffield. She has developed her passion and skills in this area thanks to her Digital and Technology Solutions degree apprenticeship.

“I work at DeeperThanBlue in Sheffield and mainly support the front-end development team. Due to the nature of the degree apprenticeship, I have also been given the opportunity to work with the back-end development team, the project management team, and the commercial team.

“It's immensely fulfilling to work and study simultaneously, and I consider myself fortunate to have received so much support from my employer. I find the experience of learning through practical, workplace situations insightful and feel I learn faster through ‘real-life’ situations.

“To be entirely truthful, I never intended to go to university because I didn't believe it was a good fit for me. However, I did consider the prospect of an apprenticeship, allowing me to learn while working, something that aligned with my kinaesthetic learning style. I subscribed to the government website and received notifications for nearby software engineering apprenticeships. Initially, none of them appeared to be a good match for me, until I came across the listing for my current position.

“I have been involved in several customer projects where I have developed and tested software solutions. This has allowed me to use programming languages and tools learned during my studies in a practical setting whilst applying them to real-world problems.

“I have opportunities to work collaboratively with other developers, both within my team and with external partners. This has allowed me to gain experience working on larger projects and understanding the importance of communication and collaboration in software development.

“I have most enjoyed the projects that have involved solving real-life problems and creating solutions that have a tangible impact on customers. For example, DeeperThanBlue developed an e-commerce site for a building supplies company. I was given the opportunity to work on this site and develop it. I especially liked this project because it gave me the opportunity to work collaboratively with colleagues and with clients, this allowed me to learn from others and gain valuable teamwork skills.

“Before applying for a degree apprenticeship, there are important factors to consider. It's essential to conduct thorough research into the different opportunities available and find one that best aligns with your career aspirations. I would also consider your learning style, and whether a degree apprenticeship would suit you.

“Taking advantage of the support systems available to apprentices is crucial for success. Resources can include mentors, tutors, and other opportunities available to help apprentices achieve their goals.

“It's important to acknowledge that choosing to study a degree apprenticeship can be extremely challenging and demanding at times, as it requires balancing both work and study commitments. You must be prepared for the hard work and commitment required.

“My goal is to pursue a career in software development and further develop my skills with DeeperThanBlue. Throughout my experience as an apprentice software engineer, I have discovered a particular passion for front-end development, and I aspire to specialise in that area exclusively.”
