Esme works in research and development at Luxfer MEL Technology, a developer and producer of magnesium and zirconium materials. She recently completed a BEng Materials Technology degree apprenticeship with Sheffield Hallam University, a partner of the South Yorkshire Institute of Technology.

“One of the main advantages of this course is that there are numerous opportunities to apply your learning. Lab and workshop activities taught at university provide ample opportunities in conjunction with work-based activities.

“I enjoy the practical aspect of learning; applying the theoretical knowledge I have gained at both university and work is invaluable. I believe I’ve developed an in-depth knowledge through this route compared to studying at university full-time.

“Through a rotation-based system, I have gained exposure to various aspects of the working environment, including working in the zirconium side of the company, production testing, supporting manufacturing activities, and new product development.

“My favourite projects have been those that involve CAD software. I use Solidworks, a programme I’ve learnt mostly independently, and is something I thoroughly enjoy. I am creative and think outside of the box to resolve a challenge or issue. I have redesigned equipment such as gas manifolds and revised existing parts such as launders and carriers to overcome operator challenges.

“My course leader, lecturers and learning coach have all supported me throughout my apprenticeship, including managing my workload, advice on report writing techniques and developing my technical knowledge.

“Choosing an apprenticeship can be difficult, but it's important to explore options and reach out to organisations. Luxfer has supported me throughout my apprenticeship, and I'm grateful for their continuous support.”

“Degree apprenticeships offer the advantageous combination of working and studying, including the financial benefit of earning a wage without accruing student debt. The main advantage is the amount of experience I have gained.

“I aim to progress to a more managerial role. My interest in leading both people and projects is one of the aspects of my role I have developed most recently and am keen to improve, as well as my knowledge of business in general.”

This course is delivered by Sheffield Hallam as part of the South Yorkshire Institute of Technology
