“Winning Deliveroo’s packaging competition has shown that hard work leads to successful outcomes.”

Josephine and Will

Josephine and Will are both degree apprentices at Sheffield Hallam University studying BSc (Hons) Packaging Professional. Their innovative approach to packaging design recently earned them first place in a competition with Deliveroo to create sustainable food packaging.

Their winning entry, recognised by judges from Biopak, Deliveroo, and Sheffield Hallam University, transformed a standard rectangular box with a new sealing system using additional folds in the cardboard. The innovative solution prevents spillages, maintains food temperature, and reduces environmental impact.

“We began by researching the problem and existing packaging,” said Josephine. “Then we developed, tested, and refined a solution that met the competition’s challenging requirements. By applying what we learned from the degree, we created a practical and impactful final design.”

The judges commended their design’s practicality and its potential to revolutionise food delivery packaging. In addition to a £1,000 award, Will and Josephine will collaborate with Biopak to bring their design to market for restaurants to purchase on Deliveroo’s packaging website.

Josephine said, “It assured me that I can design new packaging and motivated me to keep pushing forward. Seeing a physical demonstration of our abilities come together was incredibly rewarding.”

Will added, “This competition has shown that, despite often being time-poor as an apprentice, hard work leads to successful outcomes. It’s been a great motivation to continue developing my skills and versatility.”

Their achievement highlights the growing importance of sustainable practices in packaging design.

“There’s a push towards sustainability from both consumer demand and new legislation,” Josephine said. “It’s clear that companies will need to adapt, even if it impacts profit.”

Looking ahead, both students are eager to make a lasting impact in the industry. “I want to grow my experience, take on more responsibility, and deliver impactful packaging projects,” said Josephine. Will added, “I aspire to become a technical expert and support the next generation of apprentices entering the industry.”
