Industry links

We have strong links with a wide range of professional bodies and employers. Many of our courses are accredited by professional bodies including:

We collaborate with local and national organisations on a professional basis. Many of our academic staff have worked and continue to work in practice and offer consultancy, while others are represented on national and regional boards. Our staff are also chair or panel members of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), the Royal Institute of British Architecture (RIBA), the Royal Geographical Society, the Chartered Institute of Building and the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management.

Work with us

We value greatly the immense support we receive from employers. Many companies support us year after year through the provision of year-long placements, work experience opportunities, research projects, guest lectures, field-trip venues and visiting speakers at departmental conferences.

If you're an employer and are looking for some additional support for your business, these are some of the ways you can work with us

Sandwich placements and work experience

Most of our undergraduate courses include either a sandwich year working in the relevant industry sector or a short period of work experience. With these professional placements, you get the benefit of our students' up-to-date knowledge, enthusiasm and fresh perspective and they get real-life experience, making them some of the most employable graduates in the UK.

It's easy to find the right student for you. We'll advertise your position, collect CVs and even facilitate interviews on campus if you want. Contact our placements team to discuss your needs on dsplacements@shu.ac.uk

Tailor made programmes of study in partnership with employers

We have developed tailor-made programmes of study in partnership with employers such as Barratt Developments and Kier. These courses are designed to give employees the skills and expertise they need to strengthen their organisations in the future.

Staff training and professional development

A business is only as good as its people. In a constantly changing environment, keeping your team's knowledge up to date is the key to your success. With years of experience and long-term strategic thinking driven by our academic research, we can help you grow your business or develop the skills of your workforce.

Part-time learning and sponsorship

Many of our students are studying part-time and enjoy the challenge of studying while working. All our courses are fully supported by a virtual learning environment, which can be accessed anytime, anywhere, helping our students juggle the competing demands on their time. Often our placement students are retained and sponsored by their employers to study their final year part-time.

Bespoke learning and courses

We can design specific staff development programmes based on your business needs. That means every penny you spend on training is working for your business. We have recently run two successful foundation and top-up degree courses that have been developed in conjunction with Kier and Barratt Homes. We have also worked with the RICS on home inspector training and are providers of Green Deal training.

Continuous professional development (CPD)

We understand how important it is to keep your staff up to date on the changes that affect your sector, whether they are legislative or knowledge-based. We can work with you to provide high quality professional development for your staff, delivered either here at the University or in your workplace. We have developed and delivered in-house CPD sessions for organisations including Derbyshire County Council and Kier Sheffield.

Examples of topic areas are

  • sustainable construction and carbon management
  • BIM update
  • ecological surveying techniques and management planning
  • building regulations updates
  • landlord and tenant updates
  • CDM update
  • RICS Red Book updates

Staff training and professional development

We are proud to be part of a growing and enthusiastic international community of graduates, students, business representatives, government agencies, third sector organisations, professional bodies and our own academics and researchers.

Each year we draw on this network to host a range of professional workshops and conferences, often in partnership with other organisations, so we can learn from each other and explore new ideas and techniques.

Consultancy and advice

Whether you're looking for strategic guidance or an innovative solution to a specific problem, you can draw on our expertise to help develop your business.

Current and recent projects include:
