Career support initiatives at Sheffield Hallam

Equality in employment

Our policies and procedures support a working environment that values diversity and ensures individual talents are fully utilised to achieve the University’s goals.

The University is committed to ensuring a good work-life balance for our employees. Where applicable, we support and operate a number of flexible working schemes, including job-share and flexible working hours.

Depending on length of service, we offer maternity and adoption pay above statutory levels. We have an on-site nursery run by qualified staff, and run a childcare voucher scheme. Visit our jobs pages for information about what it's like to work at Sheffield Hallam, including staff profiles and views.

The Hallam Deal

Your contribution is valued every day – in terms of your commitment, passion, delivery, and your sheer hard work. We want to share with you what you can expect in return. It’s not just the tangible pay and benefits; it’s the clarity of expectation, the job itself, the working environment and the opportunities available. We call this the ‘Hallam Deal’. The Hallam Deal is composed of five main areas:

  • Where you work
  • Working together
  • The Job you do
  • How you get rewarded
  • The opportunity

We are developing the Hallam deal with academic and profession service staff.

Further information on these opportunities can be accessed via the Hallam Deal intranet page (SHU login required).

Personal and professional development

The University's HR & OD Department delivers a range of staff development courses, including personal effectiveness, leadership and management development, personal development and career planning.

In addition, we provide a breadth of opportunities for academic staff through the Sheffield Hallam Researcher Development Programme (SHaRD) and the University's Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Scheme.

  • The CPD Scheme offers a programme of internal and external speakers aimed at exploring new perspectives on teaching and learning, developing new classroom skills, engaging with other Sheffield Hallam staff, and generally supporting career development.
  • Our Professional Recognition Scheme supports all academic and learning support staff in achieving recognition for the high quality of their practice. The scheme is accredited by the Higher Education Academy and conforms to the sector-owned UK Professional Standards Framework.
  • For staff and postgraduate research students, the SHaRD Programme consists of a suite of development opportunities under the broad themes of: research methods, research skills, communicating research, managing research, and career management. Postgraduate researchers can also take advantage of PhD skills and career management workshops.

Further information on these opportunities can be accessed via the Academic CPD portal (SHU login required).
