Research and Development for Business

Our Research and Development for Business pillar works closely with industry and the public sector, helping to inform the design, implementation and evaluation of products, services and interventions that promote physical activity, improve health and wellbeing and drive economic growth.

We provide businesses with rapid access to world-leading R&D expertise and facilities, help start-ups develop their products and services through our Advanced Wellbeing Accelerator programme, and collaborate with global businesses to co-create long-term strategic roadmaps. These initiatives allow us to jointly address the challenges of physical inactivity.

The research and development for business pillar is organised into two themes

Aim

To provide technology and service solutions across the business lifecycle for start-ups, dynamic SMEs, global businesses and the public sector, that address one or more of the five Global Challenges.

Objectives

  • Develop new strategic collaborations with global organisations in the areas of cancer, technology-assisted rehabilitation and healthcare who invest to support the mission of the AWRC.
  • Establish a startup incubator that provides Sheffield Hallam students and researchers with the skills, experience and confidence to enter the world of entrepreneurial innovation.
  • Develop a process to engage and support formal and fee-paying consultancy from industry and the public sector across the business lifecycle, including thematic acceleration for start-ups, spin outs and entrepreneurs.
  • As part of the SYMCA Innovation District, lead on the development of an innovation cluster at the Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, based around the concept of health, wellbeing and life sciences.
  • Manage and harness existing strategic collaboration relationships.
