Arrivals and Departures: New Art Perspectives of Hong Kong

Date: 2011

Arrivals and Departures is an exhibition exploring dual perspectives of Hong Kong – the city and its urban life. Using the tenth anniversary of the ‘handover’ of British rule or ‘reunification’ of China’s rule, the exhibition questions the rhetoric of migration and immigration, the colonial past and multicultural future, civic freedom and mass demonstration, and cultural and political identity versus the local at grass roots level. Explored through the work of ten new commissioned works from Hong Kong and UK-based artists, the exhibition suggest notions of place at many levels from the lived experience of everyday life to a desire to connect to a place, examining how proximity reflects identity and condition.

Artists include Leung Mee-Ping, Pak Sheung-Chuen, Stella So, Tam Wai-Ping, Community Museum Project, Gordon Cheung, Yuen Fong Ling, Kwong Lee, Anthony Key and Mayling To. The exhibition was curated in collaboration with Hong Kong partners Howard Chan and Siu King-Chung, and supported by Arts Council England, Hong Kong Arts Development Council, Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, and Urbis Manchester.

Details of the Arrivals and Departures exhibition is available on the Urbis website.
