This foundation year has been designed to encourage exploration and experimentation in art and design. You’ll learn to work confidently and creatively with a wide range of different materials. After completing your foundation, you’ll have the skills and knowledge you need for full honours degree study, and progress directly onto the BA/BSc Product Design course.
How you learn
This course is part of the Sheffield Institute of Arts — our creative community within Sheffield Hallam.
The course is suitable if you don’t meet the entry requirements for our BA/BSc Product Design course, or you want extra preparation before starting degree-level study. You share the first year with other art and design foundation year students, then move on to the degree.
The foundation year aims to embed the creative process, and provide contextual awareness of different art and design disciplines. You will work on self-directed and collaborative projects.

After the foundation year, you will be ready to start the full degree. BA/BSc Product Design is an engaging and creative course that allows you to work in exceptional facilities, with expert staff and with well-known companies in developing your own products.
On your full honours degree, placement opportunities allow you to cement your skills in industry. Previous students have secured placements with Design Futures, Morphy Richards, Lowe Alpine and Mazda Europe.
Throughout the course, you'll create a body of work of applied projects, and undertake independent research into art and design.
After completing your foundation year and full undergraduate degree, you’ll be prepared for a career in

Where will I study?
You study at City Campus

Equipment and facilities
During the foundation year, you work with
- a dedicated studio
- state-of-the-art workshops
- digital design facilities
On the full undergraduate course, you work with
- extensive technical workshops
- computer-driven CNC equipment
- 3D printing
- 3D digital tools
This must include at least 32 points from at least one A level or equivalent BTEC National qualifications (to include a relevant subject, such as Art, Design and Technology, Textiles or Graphics). For example:
- CDD at A Level with a grade C in a relevant subject.
- MMP in BTEC Extended Diploma in a relevant subject.
- A combination of qualifications which must include an A level grade C or BTEC grade M in a relevant subject and may include AS levels, EPQ and general studies
- English Language or Literature at grade C or 4
We may also accept you, if you have limited qualifications but can show evidence of ability and a genuine commitment to studying Art and Design.
We treat the foundation year as part of the Art and Design degree programme. Offers made to students will be for four years of study (or five years of study including a placement). This is made up of the foundation year plus one of our Art and Design degrees.
If your application is successful, you will be invited to attend a selection event with a portfolio of work to demonstrate your ability. Find out about the selection process and how to produce a strong portfolio.
If English is not your first language, you will need an IELTS score of 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in all skills or equivalent. If your English language skill is currently below IELTS 6.0 we recommend you consider either the International Foundation Programme: Art, Design and Media or Sheffield Hallam University Pre-sessional English course which will enable you to achieve an equivalent English score.
Please note the University will only admit students who are aged 18 at the point of enrolment.

Fees and funding
Our tuition fee for UK/EU students starting full-time undergraduate study in 2020/2021 are regulated by the UK government and are yet to be confirmed. For an indication, our tuition fees for UK/EU students starting this course in 2019/20 are £9,250 per year.
† If you are studying an undergraduate course, postgraduate pre-registration course or postgraduate research course over more than one academic year then your tuition fees may increase in subsequent years in line with Government regulations or UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) published fees. Our tuition fee for international students starting full-time study in 2020/21 is £13,650 per year. During your placement year you will pay a reduced fee of £1,200.
