Work Placement Route
For international students wishing to undertake a placement as part of this course, you must apply to MSc Quantity Surveying (Work Experience) route. Transferring to the work experience route later will not be possible due to visa restrictions.
Course summary
- Develop the knowledge and skills to measure, cost, plan, procure, develop and manage construction projects.
- Strengthen your knowledge of theory, contracts and practice by studying case studies and simulations.
- Build on your existing education or career to become a successful, qualified chartered surveyor.
On this course you’ll develop the skills you need to be a quantity surveyor for private or public clients or construction organisations. The course is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) – we aim to help you graduate with the academic, professional and ethical standards required by these professional bodies.

How you learn

Senior Lecturer in Quantity SurveyingCatherine has worked at Sheffield Hallam since 2009 as a Senior Lecturer in Quantity Surveying.
Applied learning
Field trips
The course includes an international field trip, placing you in a challenging environment where you complete a development project. Working with students from related subjects, you’ll increase your understanding of the different roles in the profession that interact on a daily basis – as well as how a quantity surveyor fits in with these roles. The project also develops the skills and knowledge you’ll need to become an effective professional practitioner.
Previous field trips have taken place in Shanghai and Toronto, with assistance from international surveying firms. You may also have the opportunity to study and work abroad, and gain hands-on experience of the education environment – with the possibility of funding through the Erasmus+ programme (until 2023) or the Turing Scheme.
Networking
Employability is embedded throughout the course – modules have been designed to reflect the demands of both the professional body and relevant industry employers. This is supported by the university’s employment and careers service, departmental employment advisers and events such as the department careers day.

Entry requirements
All students
Minimum 2:2 degree or equivalent in a recognised professional qualification at corporate membership level. We also consider applicants with alternative qualifications or a combination of qualifications and relevant work experience. You may also be able to claim credit points which can reduce the amount of time it takes to complete your qualification at Sheffield Hallam. Find out more
If English is not your first language you typically need an IELTS 6.0 score with a minimum of 5.5 in all other skills or equivalent.
If your English language skill is currently below IELTS 6.0 we recommend you consider a Sheffield Hallam University Pre-sessional English course which will enable you to achieve an equivalent English score.

Our tuition fee for UK students starting full-time study in 2024/25 is £10,310 for the course without work experience placement or £11,810 with work experience placement. The tuition fee displayed above is for the full course. If the full course is more than one year in duration, the fee will be divided into annual payments which will then be rounded. This may mean the total fee you pay is slightly higher than the fee stated above. If you take a break in study or have to re-take part of the course, you may also be charged an additional fee and will be notified of this at the time.
If you are studying an undergraduate course, postgraduate pre-registration course or postgraduate research course over more than one academic year then your tuition fees may increase in subsequent years in line with Government regulations or UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) published fees.
