How you learn

Watch course leader Dr Simon Choppin talk about this course.

Our course focuses on giving practical experience in techniques relevant to the sports engineering industry. You'll work individually and in groups, learn how to use engineering software and hardware and work on an industry-relevant project. It is led by Dr Simon Choppin, a fellow of the research centre and an associate editor of the Sports Engineering Journal.

There are opportunities to study abroad at one of our partner universities with the possibility of funding through the Erasmus programme (subject to the UK’s continued participation in the Erasmus programme following the Brexit transition period).

Senior Research Fellow in the Centre for Sports Engineering Research (CSER), specialising in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and reverse engineering.

Applied learning

Work placements

You complete a major industry linked research project to develop your practical understanding of sports engineering, to gain vital real world experience as well as improve your employability. Recent student projects have been partnered to organisations such as Adidas, Ping, Prince Sports, Mitre, Gunn and Moore, Eley, International Tennis Federation, International Rugby Board, D3o, English Institute of Sport and UK Sport.

You will also be provided with a significant number of opportunities to undertake additional placements, internships and volunteer roles (across a range of activities). You will be encouraged to develop your own experiences to enhance your career.

Field trips

We hope to provide opportunities for travel and exchange and we are developing a European Network of Sports Engineering. In 2016 and 2017 we travelled to Delft Technical University with a group of students to complete a two-week exchange program.

Networking opportunities

The course is delivered by the Centre for Sports Engineering Research, an internationally renowned centre of excellence for research and consultancy with over 200 years of cumulative experience. The centre has 35 research staff and PhD students, making it one of the world's largest centres for sports engineering research.

The group has close ties to many different sports companies and organisations and works extensively to enhance elite performance across many sports through its role as an English Institute of Sport research and innovation partner. Many of our alumni now work in the Sports Engineering industry, by joining our course you get access to our large alumni network.

Entry requirements

All students

This course has been designed for high achieving graduates from a wide range of technical subjects such as engineering, physics or mathematics. The course is selective and welcomes applications from graduates with a 2.1 or above.

You may also be able to claim credit points which can reduce the amount of time it takes to complete your qualification at Sheffield Hallam. Find out more

Graduates from sports science degrees are welcome to apply if they can demonstrate sufficient expertise in mathematics and physics, for example good results at A-level, and have excelled in biomechanics throughout their undergraduate degree.

If English is not your first language you will need an IELTS score of 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in all skills, or a recognised equivalent. If your level of English language is currently below IELTS 6.0 we recommend you consider an appropriate Sheffield Hallam University

Our tuition fee for UK/EU students starting full-time study in 2020/21 is £7,420 for the course.
