TESOL involves teaching English to children or adults in varied international educational settings. The course focuses on developing English for education and language teaching, issues in education, teaching methods and comparative research. Successful completion can help you progress to the MA TESOL, MA Education or an initial English language teaching qualification.

How you learn
All our courses are designed around a set of key principles based on engaging you with the world, collaborating with others, challenging you to think in new ways, and providing you with a supportive environment in which you can thrive.
This course adopts a student-centred approach to learning with opportunities to interact with other learners, apply your knowledge to language teaching problems and reflect on experience. You will observe, be taught and mentored by staff with extensive experience of English language teaching, supporting international students and initial teacher training on undergraduate programmes.
The course aims to provide students with the skills most valued by employers: identifying and solving problems, exhibiting criticality in thinking and writing, communicating effectively and working as a team.

Applied learning
Live projects
Throughout the course, your studies will be applied through research projects and modules, as well as in the teaching of groups and individuals. You'll consider certain aspects of learning in detail, and gain an in-depth knowledge of the English language.
Throughout, you'll reflect on your learning and teaching experiences, and develop your own practice. You'll be supported throughout in academic tutorials, which will help you to develop and identify ways to improve.
Networking opportunities
There will also be networking opportunities with other students studying on undergraduate and postgraduate TESOL modules.

Entry requirements
All students
Applicants normally need to hold 240 from Levels 4 and 5 or equivalent. You would have normally have studied a qualification such as:
• a Foundation Degree or Diploma e.g. the Diploma of Dazhuan, with some relevant content in language or education at Level 4 and Level 5.

If English is not your first language you need an IELTS score of 6.0 or above, with a minimum score of 5.5 in each skill. If your English language skill is currently below IELTS 6.0 we recommend you consider a Sheffield Hallam University Pre-sessional English course which will enable you to achieve an equivalent English score.
We welcome applications from people of any age. There may be some flexibility in entry requirements provided you have other relevant learning or experience. This must show that you will benefit from and successfully finish the course.

Fees and funding
Home students
Our tuition fee for UK students starting full-time undergraduate study in 2023/24 is £9,250 per year. These fees are regulated by the UK government and are therefore subject to changes in government policy.
If you are studying an undergraduate course, postgraduate pre-registration course or postgraduate research course over more than one academic year then your tuition fees may increase in subsequent years in line with Government regulations or UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) published fees.
