'Be pro-active in gaining opportunities and take every opportunity provided to you, even if it may traditionally be out of your comfort zone'

Megan Pirrie

Megan Pirrie is a graduate of the LLM International Sports Law in Practice program. During the course, she had the opportunity to complete a placement with the Law Offices of Howard Jacobs in Los Angeles, California. As Megan explains, the firm primarily focuses on litigation in doping, team selection disputes, and SafeSport issues, which were also the main areas of Megan’s interest.

"During my time in California, I had the chance to observe the litigation of multiple SafeSport hearings. I enjoyed observing how the cases were formulated, how the clients were prepared, and how the cases were litigated. This experience solidified and furthered my interest in safeguarding in sport and litigation. Furthermore, being able to observe such high-quality litigation can only benefit me in my career as a solicitor."

Currently, Megan is studying the LPC, but between completing the LLM and commencing a new degree, she worked as a Legal Governance Officer at British Swimming.

"While working at British Swimming, I enjoyed applying my knowledge of legal and governance issues in sport into practice. I also appreciated gaining a deeper understanding of how National Governing Bodies operate as businesses while ensuring athletes and staff receive adequate support," says Megan.

We also asked Megan what she enjoyed the most about studying at Hallam:

"I particularly enjoyed the dissertation section of the course. My dissertation focused on safeguarding in sport, an area of law I am particularly passionate about. Since I was in California at the time of writing my dissertation, I had an unmatched opportunity to see how the SafeSport system operates in the United States and compare it with the current system within the United Kingdom. This allowed me to observe the practical implications of such a system, supporting my analysis in my dissertation."
