What to know about living in halls
Our general guidelines will help make your move into accommodation straight forward and hassle-free. Be sure to check your tenancy agreement for any specific rules that apply to your accommodation.
What you need to know
Moving out before the end of the academic year
All contracts are legally-binding and you are committed to pay for your accommodation for the entirety of the contract, even if you leave early.
However, in exceptional circumstances you may be able to terminate your contract by finding a suitable full-time student to take your place. Full details will be provided in your contract.
Staying in halls of residence over the summer
Tenancy agreements in our halls of residence are 44 weeks in length from mid-September.
If you need to extend or book any accommodation over the summer months, contact Accommodation Services around May/June time.
Do not vape or smoke in halls of residence
All our halls enforce a strict non-smoking policy. This includes vaping and electronic cigarettes.
What you need to consider
Parking your car in halls of residence
The University does not encourage students to bring a car as Sheffield has good transport links, however, some of our halls have limited car parking spaces available.
If you have a specific and genuine need for a parking space such as for accessibility reasons, please make a note of this on your application for accommodation. Once you have received a room offer, you should contact your landlord/site manager to request a permit depending on availability.
Bringing visitors to your flat
We understand you'll likely want to have friends and family visit. Guests are allowed within halls of residence, but there may be some rules for your specific building.
Make sure you check your tenancy agreement for specific rules and speak to your site team if you have any questions.
If in doubt, check your contract
Most of the information you'll need about living in halls of residence will be included in your contract or as part of your induction.
So, if you're ever unsure, ask your site manager or look at your contract.
