National Centre of Excellence for Degree Apprenticeships

Sheffield Hallam is home to the National Centre of Excellence for Degree Apprenticeships (NCEDA). We support close to 3,000 degree apprentices, offering opportunities to people of all ages to work while they learn in a wide variety of sectors and roles.

Our team includes some of the UK's leading experts in the provision of higher and degree apprenticeships (HDAs), regularly contributing to the shaping of national and regional policy.

We share best practice to allow joint-learning across the sector and provide advice for:

  • Government consultations
  • Regional economic planning
  • Local government and devolution

Why apprenticeships matter

Apprenticeships help narrow skills gaps and boost social mobility. They attract learners of all ages from disadvantaged and non-traditional backgrounds, and areas with low participation, or progression to, higher education.

They provide new opportunities. Apprenticeships can bring new talent into the workplace. They allow individuals to learn as they earn, supporting people into employment as well as helping those in low-skilled employment, providing opportunities to upskill and reskill.

For employers, apprenticeships are an opportunity for organisations to improve productivity through new knowledge and skills.

Higher and degree apprenticeships have a vital role to play in driving future economies. Designed in partnership with employers and informed by strategic direction from regional economic bodies, apprenticeships are key to the government's levelling up agenda.
