Double our annual intake of healthcare students

Double our annual intake of students studying to become healthcare professionals at the University by 2025.

Student sterilising medical equipment

As a leading UK healthcare training provider, with innovative delivery of curriculum and placements, we are committing to doubling our annual intake of students studying to become healthcare professionals by 2025.

Every year nearly 3,000 healthcare students studying nursing, midwifery and allied health professions begin their studies at Sheffield Hallam. Most of these students undertake work placements and go onto work in the NHS within the region after completing university.

Our Civic University Agreement commits to boosting local NHS services by sending our fully qualified nurses, midwives, physiotherapists, radiographers, occupational therapists, mental health practitioners and other key professionals out across the region to provide vital care.

Our students on the frontline

In April 2020 over 600 final-year nursing and allied health students from Sheffield Hallam volunteered to join the NHS workforce immediately and help battle the Covid-19 pandemic during the first wave of the virus.

This included 376 nursing students who joined the NHS sooner than anticipated – in their final six months of their degrees, becoming paid volunteers. The posts supported key staff involved at the frontline including nursing, midwifery, paramedic practice, operating department practice, radiotherapy and oncology, diagnostic radiography, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and end of life care.

Professor Sally Shearer OBE is the Executive Director of Nursing and Quality at Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust.

“We are indebted to those final year students in the last six months of their education programme who have kindly opted to undertake an extended placement period,  joining our teams and providing frontline care during the Covid-19 pandemic.’’
