Graduates

We offer a lifetime of support to Sheffield Hallam University graduates. We are here to help you make that change from studying to entering the world of work and beyond. You can come to us at any time in your life, not just after you have finished your studies, for support such as managing a career change, considering further study, or even just working out what you want to do.

Support available to you

Handshake - search for jobs and careers events. Handshake is our brand-new careers platform where you can search and apply for graduate opportunities, attend employers events, careers fairs, and book skills workshops to help you with your career.

As a Hallam graduate, you have access to Handshake. Follow the instructions below to set up your Handshake profile for the first time and connect with Sheffield Hallam University to see the opportunities available on our platform:

  • Go to 'Register new Handshake account'
  • Use a personal email address to set up your account (a personal email address is required to verify your Handshake profile, as you no longer have access to your student account)
  • Make sure you choose Sheffield Hallam University when a university is requested - this will ensure your request to connect to the University comes to us

Once we have verified your graduate status, your profile will be approved by the Careers & Employability team within 3 - 4 days of your request. Once you have followed these instructions, you must then use the 'You can also sign in with your email address' option (underneath the Current SHU Students login button) to login to Handshake as a graduate.

Graduate online career tools

Our online career tool platform, Career Centre 360, contains career support resources and practical tools to help you prepare for the recruitment process and think about your next career steps.

In order to access Career Centre 360, please follow the instructions on the Alumni login page.

The Graduates First Portal allows you to practice psychometric tests, video interviews, and more. If you have graduated within the last three years, you can contact our careers team at careers@shu.ac.uk, who can provide you with access to the portal. We will register you on the system and send you your login details. If you have previously registered with Graduates First as a student, you will still be able to access the portal as a graduate.

Appointments and practice interviews

Our Advisers offer one-to-one appointments in which they can provide bespoke feedback on CVs and job applications, tailored advice and guidance regarding your career decision-making and skill development. Later appointments are offered on a Wednesday between 4-7pm so you can still see an Employability Adviser around your work and home schedule.

You can practice your interview skills with our bespoke practice interview sessions, receiving detailed constructive feedback to help you improve and be the best candidate you can be for your next interview.

Please note: As a graduate, you are advised to contact careers directly to book an appointment or practice interview. You will then receive a confirmation to your chosen personal email address.

Working for yourself

For those wanting to venture into working for yourself, you can access our Hallam Graduate Start-ups offer from The Enterprise Team. This support includes access to funding, one-to-one appointment, online interactive webinars, and mentoring support.

Networking

You may want to expand your network but you may not be sure where to start. Search for other alumni with the LinkedIn alumni tool and see what kind of industries they have gone into.
