Course summary
- Develop advanced programming skills, using C++ from the start
- Use industry-standard technologies: Microsoft's DirectX, Vulkan, PlayStation® devkits, Unity and Unreal game engines, Android SDK and Oculus and Vive VR SDK
- Learn about 3D graphics, computer architecture, game engines, game ethics and game industry business models
Study the skills demanded by the games industry, such as programming, software engineering and optimisation, mathematics, and the use of games hardware on desktops, consoles, and mobile platforms. Build project management skills and develop your own games in a dedicated PlayStation® teaching lab.

How you learn

Each year your main games module uses project-based learning. You learn and are assessed through undertaking a series of game development projects, both individually and in teams. Project-based learning helps you build your confidence as a game developer, and you get to experience what it's like to work in a game development team. Projects are based around a particular topic, for example, building a 3D game in DirectX, but you have the opportunity to design and develop the specific project application in a direction of your choice.

Live projects
If you do well in the first two years, you will be eligible for transfer to our related MComp course, an integrated masters course that provides additional depth of study and increased industry involvement. You may also be selected to work within Steel Minions, our own commercially licensed game development studio, and take part in small-scale commercial development projects.
Networking opportunities
We work in close partnership with games companies such as Sumo Digital, SN Systems and Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe (SIEE). They provide equipment and input into the design, development and delivery of the course, ensuring we teach the very latest topics. We also work with Grads In Games to organise industry speakers to give talks on specialist topics and offer employability advice.
We've been awarded PlayStation®First status by Sony (SIEE), providing access to PlayStation® professional development hardware (devkits) and software (SDK) and equipping students with industry-relevant game development skills across PlayStation® and PlayStation® VR.
Competitions
There is an annual student prize for the best software development tool, sponsored by SN Systems — a part of Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Entry requirements
All students
112 UCAS points, including 64 points from two A levels or equivalent, or an alternative qualification such as an Access course.
If you don't meet these criteria you may be qualified for our BSc Hon Computer Science for Games with Foundation Year.
If English is not your first language you need an IELTS score of 6.0 or above, with a minimum score of 5.5 in each skill.
Please note the University will only admit students who are aged 18 or over at the point of enrolment.

Fees and funding
Home students
Our tuition fee for UK students starting full-time undergraduate study in 2022/23 is £9,250 per year. During your placement year you will pay a reduced fee of £1,200.
† If you are studying an undergraduate course, postgraduate pre-registration course or postgraduate research course over more than one academic year then your tuition fees may increase in subsequent years in line with Government regulations or UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) published fees.
