This course is designed to create experienced, savvy graduates, ready for exciting media positions. You'll acquire both the management skills and the media expertise that you need to excel in the dynamic creative industries. This course also offers a two-year work experience route including a placement of up to 12 months.

How you learn
Your studies will comprise four taught modules, as well as a major project alongside or within an organisation. You'll learn how to exploit the latest digital media technologies and platforms, across interactive, social and mobile content, as well as the management of digital media businesses, organisations and teams. You'll gain a solid theoretical grounding and useful practical experience - building an eye-catching portfolio to show prospective employers - and work with the award-winning employability team to enhance your employability and enterprise skills.

Key themes
You will begin by gaining a foundational understanding of the principles of digital media and its role in contemporary business and culture. This initial phase includes topics such as digital transformation and innovation. As you progress, you will delve into more specialised topics such as digital business and technologies, content creation, marketing, and user experience design, applying your knowledge through practical projects and case studies. In the final phase of the course, you will focus on a major research project or industry-based dissertation. This comprehensive journey equips you with the skills and insights necessary to lead and innovate in the fast-evolving digital media landscape.

Applied learning
Work placements
You’ll have the opportunity to go on a work placement for up to 12 months, where you’ll apply academic theory and your skills in a real-world setting. This hands-on experience will enhance your professional development and help you to make informed career choices after graduation. We’ll support you to source a placement that is relevant to your course. Throughout your placement, you’ll be supported to reflect on your experience and contribution to the organisation you work for. You'll also share your progress and achievements with your Placement Academic Supervisor as part of your final assessment.
Live projects
Throughout the course, you will be expected to work on real client briefs, providing you vital industry experience and material for your portfolio. Previously students have worked with a range of clients and sectors such as the Data and Marketing Association, Instagram, Royal Mail, KFC, Sheffield City Council, The Economist, Whyte & Mackay and St Luke’s hospice.
Field trips
During the course you will visit digital agencies and creative studios to gain insight on the latest industry practice and opportunities. Previously our students have visited companies such as Hydra Creative, Objective, Google, Quba Creative and Four Agency.
Networking opportunities
The superb industry links, projects, site visits and field trips involved in this course provide ample networking opportunities.
Industry days and events are also held on campus and within the Sheffield Cultural Industries Quarter, where you'll take part in workshops, talks, and exhibitions held by creative media industry representatives, professionals, and companies/ organisations. These activities give a window to the world of work and opportunities that lie ahead.

Year 1
Compulsory modules
In this module you will consider the broader contexts where digital products and services are produced, distributed, and consumed. The module prepares you to think about strategic questions from analyst and management perspectives. Students will learn what are the established methods used in the commercial sector to collect and analyse data, and how that informs business and creative decisions. As a synthesis, you will create an entrepreneurial proposal for a business operating in the ecosystem. This will include documenting different value chains having to do with trends, target audiences, data collection, and technological platforms, according to the theories and methods introduced during the module.
You’ll study topics such as:
- Introduction to business model and plan preparation
- Introduction to big data and key performance metrics
- Case studies of product lifecycles from soft launch to shutdown
- Trend analysis methods
- Mobile and Internet research resources and industry reports
This module enables you to develop an understanding of strategic digital marketing planning and management skills and to be able to apply these principles to organisations and clients. You will gain a thorough knowledge of different business models and the challenges of today’s turbulent digital marketing environment and its implications for future competitive performance. Consideration is given to the organisation’s competitive environment and how this can lead to the development of sound marketing objectives, strategies and tactics. You will generate and evaluate marketing strategies that offer sustainable competitive advantage within the framework of social and legal responsibilities.

- Online marketing ad networks and behavioural targeting

- An understanding and implementation of analytics
- Site content, copy and positioning maps

In this module you will research current and emerging digital technologies and design principles. The module will consider current best practice, development frameworks and methodologies as well as encouraging novel and innovative digital media design. Students will explore the current market, devices and UI/UX design principles, utilising current development platforms to build a digital product and conduct testing to ensure that it functions as intended.

This module introduces you to organisational change within companies through digital transformation. You will examine evolving stakeholder expectations and how a robust digital, technical, and operational foundation can create a competitive advantage. You will apply your learning to a real-world brief, developing a range of strategic and data analysis skills in the process. By the end of this module, you will be equipped to understand and manage digital transformation processes, enabling you to drive innovation and efficiency within an organisation. This comprehensive approach ensures you are prepared to meet modern business challenges with effective digital strategies, positioning you as a valuable asset in the digital age.

The aim of this module is to enhance your professional development through the completion of, and reflection on meaningful work experience. A work experience will provide students with opportunities to experience the realities of professional employment and experience how their course can be applied within their chosen industry setting.
The placement will:
- Allow student to apply the skills, theories and behaviours relevant and in addition to their course
- Enable students to enhance their interpersonal skills in demand by graduate employers – communication, problem solving, creativity, resilience, team work etc.
- Grow their student network and relationship building skills
- Provide students with insights into the industry and sector in which their placement occurs
- Help student make informed graduate careers choices
In this module, you will undertake a work experience (minimum duration and expectations as per HESA regulations – clarified on assignment brief/Blackboard) which is integrated, assessed and aligned to their studies and appropriate for their level of study.
Their personal Placement Academic Supervisor (PAS) will be their key point of contact during their work experience and will encourage and support students to reflect on their experience, learning and contribution to the organisation they work for.
To demonstrate gains in professional development, you will be required to share your progress, learning and achievements with your Placement Academic Supervisor and reflect on these for the summative piece of work.
Final year
Compulsory modules
This module allows you to realise your creative ambition evidenced through the production of a substantial body of independent creative media work of industry standard. You will demonstrate the ability to bring together theoretical analysis, research and professional practice in a coherent, seamless whole. You will be expected to work to a high degree of autonomy and to develop and extend skills, aptitudes and knowledge necessary for the furtherance of your creative practice. Throughout the duration of the module, you will be shown how to apply a high level of skill and critical analysis which will be demonstrated through the realisation of your project. You will apply the requirements of professional practice in both independent and collaborative activities and be confident in applying these to further study and professional application in associated careers.
The module essentially consists of a major, self-generated project of study supported by individual supervision leading to a digital media portfolio. The module enables you to build upon the skills and knowledge attained through your study. The module will provide an academically rigorous and strongly motivated self-generated project that will demonstrate competencies relevant to the creative media industry.

Equipment and facilities
You'll have access to a wide variety of facilities across the university campuses – including labs within the Institute of Technology, studios, a 24-hour learning centre, Students’ Union, cafes and eateries, lecture theatres, exhibition spaces and more. You'll be based in state-of-the-art facilities and have access to industry-standard software such as the Adobe Creative Suite and Apple software. and hardware tools from our Creative Media Centre.

All students
An honours degree (2.2 or above) or equivalent in any subject. Relevant work experience may also be considered. Overseas applicants from countries whose first language is not English must normally produce evidence of competence in English. An IELTS score of 6.0 with 5.5 in all skills (or equivalent) is the standard for non-native speakers of English.

Fees and funding
Home students
Our tuition fee for UK students starting full-time study in 2026/27 is £12,440 for the course. The tuition fee displayed above is for the full course. For this work experience route, your fees will be payable over two years, divided into two annual payments based on credits studied. The fee includes dedicated employability support to help you prepare for and secure work experience. It does not guarantee you a placement and if a placement is not secured the work experience fee will still be charged. If a placement is not secured you will transfer to the standard version of the course to complete your remaining credits, where the balance of your course fees will be due in year one in line with completing the course.
If you are studying an undergraduate course, postgraduate pre-registration course or postgraduate research course over more than one academic year then your tuition fees may increase in subsequent years in line with Government regulations or UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) published fees. International students
