Nutrition plays an important role in optimising sport and exercise performance. On this course you will study modules that will provide you with a solid foundation in nutritional science, human physiology, biochemistry, behaviour change, research skills and sports nutrition. You will also complete a sport or exercise nutrition focused research project. The course will equip you with the skills to specialise in sports nutrition.

Our assessment package for each module is carefully considered to provide applied, real-world opportunities which are varied, interesting and challenge you to be the best you can be.

Work related learning
You complete the work related learning module to reflect on personal and professional development and produce an action plan. You will be supported to identify areas for personal development in your action plans and identify objectives and activities to undertake which are tailored to your specific needs.
Typical activities include work shadowing/volunteering, working on live sports nutrition projects, attending sports nutrition conferences, attending nutrition and food-related conferences, events and workshops and undertaking online courses. You also produce a reflective portfolio where you map your developmental activities to the core competencies for nutritionists outlined by the Association for Nutrition (AfN).

You study at City Campus through a structured mix of lectures, seminars and practical sessions as well as access to digital and online resources to support your learning.

Equipment and facilities
On this course you will
- measure markers of health and exercise performance in our nutrition and exercise physiology laboratories
- have the opportunity to use athletics facilities and running tracks at the English Institute of Sport to perform research studies
- work in our sensory evaluation suite and development kitchens
- analyse the diets of athletes with our specialist dietary assessment software
Normally an honours degree in a science or relevant discipline (2:2 or above) or recognised equivalent qualification. For example food science, nutrition, health and wellbeing, exercise science, biological sciences and psychology would all be relevant. Applicants with an honours degree in an alternative discipline and relevant experience will be considered on an individual basis.
We will consider enquiries from those who have substantial experience working in relevant positions in the sport and health sector, food industry or in the field of nutrition but do not have the normal entry requirements. These applications will be dealt with in accordance with SHU Recognition of Prior Learning policy. We may invite these potential students for an interview to discuss their particular background, experience and qualifications.
If English is not their first language, applicants will need an IELTS score of 6.5 score with a minimum of 6.0 in all skills or equivalent. If the applicant's English language skill is currently below the required level we will consider a Sheffield Hallam University Pre-sessional English course which will enable them to achieve an equivalent score.

Our tuition fee for UK students starting full-time study in 2024/25 is £10,310 for the course. The tuition fee displayed above is for the full course. If the full course is more than one year in duration, the fee will be divided into annual payments which will then be rounded. This may mean the total fee you pay is slightly higher than the fee stated above. If you take a break in study or have to re-take part of the course, you may also be charged an additional fee and will be notified of this at the time.
