After completing this course you can become a chartered sport and exercise psychologist. If you already have a psychology undergraduate degree accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS), you can undertake BPS Stage 2 training. If you’ve previously completed an undergraduate degree in sport and exercise science, you can complete the CASES (The Chartered Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences) Sport and Exercise Psychology Accreditation Route (SEPAR).

Applied learning
Live projects
Live projects will help you develop and practise your consultancy skills, with qualified supervision from registered sport and exercise psychologists. This helps you prepare for BPS Stage 2 or SEPAR training, which you can undertake after completing this course.

Year 1
Compulsory modules
This module explores the core components, contemporary theories and applied practice in exercise psychology through a forward thinking curriculum designed to develop your understanding and experience. The module covers a range of topics, including: contemporary theories and models in exercise psychology, exercise uptake and adherence, motivational interviewing, exercise psychology assessment and intervention, and innovative physical activity promotion strategies. This modules provides the theoretical basis for specialism within exercise psychology.
This module evaluates contemporary, evidence-based practice in sport performance, learning and wellbeing across the lifespan. You will explore a range of up-to-date and classical topics including: sport confidence, anxiety, stress and coping, personality, group dynamics, moral issues in sport, skill acquisition and motor learning, cognitive, developmental and social and occupational psychology. This module provides the theoretical basis for practice in sport and exercise psychology.
Final year
Compulsory modules
This module provides you with an opportunity to design and deliver a large scale project under the expert guidance of a supervisor. You will synthesise and apply knowledge from your taught modules, and through a period of independent research, produce an original piece work. In some cases, this coud be undertaken in collaboration with an external partner organisation.
This module will advance your theoretical knowledge and professional skills as a sport and exercise psychologist, developing the skills needed for supervised practice training. You will study a range of topics, including teamwork, professional practice and philosophy, ethics and safeguarding, measurement tools, reflective practice and diverse groups. This module prepares you for a career as a sport and exercise psychologist.
This module will develop your knowledge and skills in research methods, design and analysis. You will learn about contemporary approaches to data collection, analysis and communication, solving complex sport and physical activity research problems from a variety of fields and disciplines. You will study topics such as contemporary research philosophies, ethics and research design; how to collect, analyse and interpret data; and data presentation and visualisation. By completing this module you will enhance your ability to intepret, undertake and evaluate research in sport and physical activity.

All students
Applicants should normally have a minimum of a second class honours degree (2.2), ideally in psychology, sport and exercise psychology, sport and exercise science or a sport, exercise or health-related subject.
If you do not hold a degree, we may be able to consider you with professional or CPD qualifications in a related discipline, or significant relevant real world experience. These will be considered on an individual basis.
Additional information for EU/International students
This course is not open to international students who require a student visa to study in the UK. If you are an international applicant but do not require a student visa, email our Admissions Team to find out whether you’re eligible to apply.
Fees and funding
Home students
Our tuition fee for UK students starting part-time study in 2026/27 is £10,940 for the course. The tuition fee displayed above is for the full course. If the full course is more than one year in duration, the fee will be divided into annual payments which will then be rounded. This may mean the total fee you pay is slightly higher than the fee stated above. If you take a break in study or have to re-take part of the course, you may also be charged an additional fee and will be notified of this at the time.
If you are studying an undergraduate course, postgraduate pre-registration course or postgraduate research course over more than one academic year then your tuition fees may increase in subsequent years in line with Government regulations or UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) published fees.
