Deaf and hearing loss

We support deaf students and students who are hard of hearing. We also support students with tinnitus and/or any other hearing related conditions.

If you are unsure whether you can receive support, please contact us. If your condition or disability has lasted or is likely to last less than 12 months, contact your faculty for support during your studies.

Support offered

We can provide practical and tailored support with your course through a learning contract and will discuss your needs with you in your disability adviser appointment or study needs assessment.

We will work with you to understand how your studies may be impacted and how we can support you as a learner. We can provide support for lectures and seminars, assignments and exams. We can also advise on support for work placements.

You could also receive additional support, such as:

  • A British Sign Language Interpreter
  • Specialist Support Professional – support with planning workload, preparing and structuring assignments, and accessing research sources
  • Note taker support
  • Specialist equipment and software

We also work closely with a wide range of University and community services and can signpost you to additional support.

Evidence requirements

To get funded support, you will need to provide a copy of a letter from your GP or audiologist which includes:

  • the diagnosis and/or recent audiogram
  • the impact of your hearing loss on your studies

If you do not already have medical evidence we recommend taking this medical evidence form (PDF, 203.8KB) to your GP or Audiologist. It provides evidence in a format accepted by the main funding bodies.

For University support detailed in a learning contract, we can accept a wider variety of evidence. To discuss this please contact a disability adviser.
