Submitting your Work

Submitting your Work

Deadline dates

The Assessment Statement in My Student Record is the primary way to check formal submission dates for all modules on your course. The Module Information tool inside each Blackboard site also shows the formal submission dates for summative assessments on the module.

The Assessment Statement

The Assessment Statement provides you with a complete overview of the tasks and sub-tasks that contribute to your overall award for your course. This is the formal record for your assessments and should be used to plan your work.

You can access your Assessment Statement by visiting My Student Record. Go to the 'My Assessments' page and then select 'Assessment Statement'.

If you have an approved extension, the agreed extension date will be displayed next to the original deadline date for the task.

Some coursework assessments will be set over a date range e.g. some group or in class work. For these types of assessment, the date of the last assessment in the range will be the one initially published in the Assessment Statement. Where this is the case, exact dates for each group assessment will be confirmed by the module leader in advance of the assessment and will be updated in your Assessment Statement when these are confirmed.

If you are referred or deferred in a task, the date for this will be shown in the statement as soon as these marks have progressed through the University assessment boards.

Exam dates will not show in the Assessment Statement at the start of the year as the exam timetable will not be confirmed yet, only that an exam is part of the assessment for the module. The Exams pages have information on when the schedule should be released. Your exam schedule also appears on MyTimetable when it is released.

What if I can't meet my deadline?

The Assessment Statement is intended to help you manage your time and plan carefully to meet all assessment submission deadlines.

Extensions

If you have any concerns about completing your coursework on time due to ill health or difficult personal circumstances you must speak to Student Support Services. They will advise you about requesting an extension to a coursework submission deadline. This request can be submitted up to 24 hours after the deadline, though you have a limit of 4 extensions per academic year.

  • If you are submitting up to 24 hours after the deadline without an approved extension, you can still use the extension process if you have not used all of your 4 extensions. You must do this within 24 hours of the deadline.
  • Coursework submitted after the due date/time without an authorised extension will receive a zero mark. The assessment task will be referred (if at first submission) or failed (if at referral submission).
  • If you have a general problem with prioritising, or working under pressure, the Library and Skills Centre can help you develop practical ways to manage your time and workload.

Exceptional Circumstances

Where your performance or ability to work on your assessments has been negatively affected by situations beyond your control, you can ask for an additional chance to complete your assessment due to your ‘exceptional circumstances’. You can make a request for consideration of your Exceptional Circumstances for all first and reassessment attempts. Please see the Extenuating Circumstances Policy for details.

Submitting in Blackboard

Online submission of coursework and the provision of feedback online is the norm across the University for all levels of study. Coursework must be submitted to the formal submission point within the relevant Blackboard module site, by the published deadline date and time. Make sure all the files needed for submission have been attached before submitting, and that you have given yourself enough time to complete your submission (in the case of large files especially) before the deadline.

When submitting your work it may also be uploaded to Turnitin for similarity checking. If you have any questions about this please speak to your module .

If you have a Learning Contract related to the assessment you should follow the advice about including this information in a coversheet.

It is your responsibility to ensure that your work is successfully submitted. Always download and save your submission receipt. If you find you have submitted the wrong work, you should be able to submit again as long as it is before the deadline. Be sure to save your receipt as it confirms that you have successfully submitted your work. See step-by-step instructions on submitting work to Blackboard. Please contact IT Help for technical support if you encounter issues.

Other ways of submitting work

Submitting audio and video files

If you are asked to submit multimedia files to Blackboard, you may need to use a tool called Panopto. See our video guide on submitting media to Blackboard using Panopto.

Submitting assessments in PebblePad

Some assessments may use PebblePad. Your tutor will provide instructions for submitting PebblePad work. For additional information take a look at the PebblePad Guidance.

File Size Limits

You will be unable to submit files over 250Mb directly into Blackboard. Your module leader will explain the submission process if you need to submit work that is expected to be a large file size.

Submitting physical pieces of work

A small number of courses require the submission of a physical artefact, such as furniture, artworks, models, etc. For submission of these works, your module tutors will give you information on how to submit them.
