The BA (Hons) Business Management and Hospitality degree develops your managerial skills and knowledge so you can create effective business solutions for the hospitality sector. You'll learn to drive positive change in an organisation – developing collaborative teams that optimise business performance, assessing markets, analysing business performance, and realising lucrative opportunities.
How you learn
You’ll be taught by professionally qualified industry experts and active researchers – exploring contemporary practices from the outset. The course is highly practical, engaging you in real-world applied business projects at every level. You’ll develop the skills, knowledge and experience you need for a successful career as a hospitality business manager.

Key Themes

Applied learning
Work Placements
You’ll have the opportunity to source a year-long work placement between your second and third years. This gives you valuable work experience to prepare you for your future career – as well as an Applied Professional Diploma to add to your CV.
You’ll have access to a wide range of support activities, employer events and resources from our Careers and Employability Team – helping you to make the most of your placement. Sheffield Hallam students have undertaken placements with companies such as Jet2, Disney World, Marriott International and Hilton Worldwide.
Live Projects
You'll work on live projects throughout the course to build your skills and professional experience. The Level 6 consultancy project involves working with a client company and delivering outcomes to their brief, supported by industry-experienced tutors. Previous students have audited accessibility information for Access for All, provided market research for TUI UK and Ireland, reviewed the hospitality offer at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, and advised a social enterprise on its catering and outdoor events.

An introduction into the global tourism and hospitality (T&H) industry, developing an understanding of global activity and economic value within operations, introducing contemporary issues, awareness and understanding of people and organisations.

Compulsory modules
This module enhances your professional development via work-related learning opportunities. You will gain interpersonal and business problem-solving skills that are key to successful graduate-level employment and learn about the business environment and the world of work.

This module builds upon concepts and practical approaches introduced at level 4 and will prepare you for sandwich placement and for level 6 consultancy project.

Elective modules
This module is for undergraduate students to study abroad in their second year, Semester 2 (only for courses that offer this option). With this module, you can spend a semester at one of the University’s approved partner institutions worldwide – from Europe to the Americas, Asia Australia or Canada. Study Abroad plays an important role in the University's commitment to an engaging, challenging, and thriving learning culture. It offers opportunities to experience other academic cultures and foster intellectual maturity while enhancing co-curricular skills and students' long-term employability. Study abroad for credit is permitted on existing university-approved courses only. Students are awarded credits and grades at the partner institution, which are converted into Sheffield Hallam credits and grades on return and included in the Sheffield Hallam degree classification. Please check and refer to the webpage “How study abroad works”. You must submit a Learning Agreement outlining the modules you will be taking at the partner institution. The Learning Agreement will be signed off by your academic tutor to ensure that the Learning broadly covers the Learning Outcomes set out in your course curriculum during your study abroad.
Year 4
Compulsory modules
Module aim:
The aim of this module is to enhance students’ professional development through the completion of and reflection on meaningful work placement(s).
A work placement will provide students with opportunities to experience the realities of professional employment and experience how their course can be applied within their chosen industry setting.
The placement will:
- Allow student to apply the skills, theories and behaviours relevant and in addition to their course
- Enable students to enhance their interpersonal skills in demand by graduate employers – communication, problem-solving, creativity, resilience, team work etc
- Grow their student network and relationship building skills
- Provide student with insights into the industry and sector in which their placement occurs
- Help student make informed graduate careers choices
Indicative Content:
In this module students undertake a sandwich placement (min 24 weeks / min 21 hours per week) which is integrated, assessed and aligned to their studies.
Their personal Placement Academic Supervisor (PAS) will be their key point of contact during their placement and will encourage and support students to reflect on their experience, learning and contribution to the organisation they work for.
To demonstrate gains in professional development, students will be required to share their progress, learning and achievements with their Placement Academic Supervisor and reflect on these for the summative piece of work.
Final year

Equipment and facilities
You’ll engage in learning across our Extended Campus, which includes flexible physical and digital support for applied learning, working, teaching and collaboration. On campus, the new Business School building will be your home space, with areas to meet other students, engage in course activities and connect with staff and employers.
You’ll learn in a variety of physical teaching spaces, in both small and large groups. You’ll also learn digitally – including the use of our Virtual Learning Environment, video media, synchronous online teaching and systems for collaboration. You’ll have access to state-of-the-art kitchen and restaurant spaces as well – plus specialist hospitality business management software and simulations.

ACCESS

Fees and funding
Home students
Tuition fees for 2026/27 are not yet confirmed. Our tuition fee for UK students on this course in 2025/26 is £5,760 for the foundation year and £9,535 per year for the degree (capped at a maximum of 20% of this during your placement year). These fees are regulated by the UK government and therefore subject to change in future years.
If you are studying an undergraduate course, postgraduate pre-registration course or postgraduate research course over more than one academic year then your tuition fees may increase in subsequent years in line with Government regulations or UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) published fees. International students
