The Act of Improvisation within the work of Tacita Dean

This Special Issue speaks to CRIs notion of improvisation as a site for the analysis of social practice. To this end the authors explore practical experiences of improvisation through experimental artistic practice. The research sets out to construct a tripartite structure that incorporates failure, serendipity, and sagacity, leading to improvisation by exploring the practice of Tacita Dean and in particular the exhibition, 'An Aside' (2005).

Lines of Resistance

Lines of Resistance is filmed at the Berlin Wall Memorial, a preserved and sealed section of the former wall and death strip which divided East and West Berlin during the Cold War. The film, informed by the narration of tour guides and visitors comments, explores their interaction with and reactions to the memorial.

This a key work representing an ongoing enquiry into the politics and economics of commodified labour in a global economy. 20 Euros per kilo (2011) was commissioned by Static Gallery Liverpool, and Peter Gorschlüter, Deputy Director Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt, for the exhibition and conference 'Terminal Convention'. Shaw develops a critically engaged enquiry into the language of sculpture, narrative and exhibition that chronicles the life of an object and its concealed modes of production.

A Period Drama

This paper explores the significance of place and context within the realm of contemporary art practice. Unexpected discoveries made during a two-month residency at Yorkshire Sculpture Park in 2008 focused on ‘mistaken place-making’, resulting in the proposal of an installation set within the grounds of YSP.

Eve Stirling

Dr Stirling trained as a product designer (Northumbria University) and before moving to academia worked in the design industry in interiors and games design. She gained her PhD from the School of Education at the University of Sheffield and in this she took a longitudinal ethnographic approach studying Facebook use by students in transition. She is interested in the proliferation of digital spaces within our everyday lives and the relationship between time and space within these.
