How to find a placement

At Sheffield Hallam we have relationships with employers that offer placements which are advertised regularly on UniHub. You will find a curated view of opportunities in your College on UniHub, watch this video to find out how to access it:

Placement Blackboard site

A tailored Blackboard site has been created for you as placement students to highlight all the different tools that you can use throughout your search, and to help you even whilst you're on placement. Register for the site below to access the structured self-help tools available to you.

Get started with our placement seeking checklist

  • Access Careers Centre 360 to work on your CV and learn about potential options for your future career
  • Find opportunities on UniHub or on external sites
  • Research the placement providers you are interested in
  • Meet your Employability Adviser to help you talk through your options and help you apply
  • Apply, keep searching and ask for help

Contacting placement providers

Emailing and phone calling potential placement hosts can be difficult if you have not done this before. Therefore, Employability Advisers can help you with this or there is information on Careers Connect.

Careers Fair

The Careers Fairs at Hallam are a great opportunity to speak to companies face-to-face and you can find out about placement opportunities directly from them. This also allows you to gain invaluable insight into companies, helping you to tailor applications for placements.

'It's not what you know, it's who you know' - make it known that you're looking for a placement. Utilising connections you may have with family, friends, acquaintances or previous companies you’ve worked for is a popular source of placement. Although, you will need to remember that all placements found are checked to be suitable and compliant with course requirements. It is also worth noting that Sheffield Hallam does not allow you to work for immediate family.

Placement criteria and eligibility

This varies between disciplines and subject areas, so for specific requirements around placement criteria and eligibility speak to your academic tutor or course leader.
