How you learn

The course provides you with the theoretical, philosophical and practical foundations of sport, exercise and health. You’ll explore the role of physical activity in addressing key public health challenges, preventing disease, supporting rehabilitation and enhancing quality of life. You’ll also have opportunities to conduct research across a range of sport, exercise and health topics.

Your learning will be supported by experts who work with national health and sport organisations. Our teaching practices are inclusive and applied, with varied and authentic assessment methods aligned to real-world tasks. You’ll develop your skills in digital capability, information literacy, critical reasoning, reflection and evidence-based decision-making.

You learn through:

  • lectures, seminars and workshops
  • a virtual learning environment (VLE)
  • embedded work-based learning experiences such as placements and field trips
  • practical activities in simulated and in-situ environments
  • independent study
  • research and enquiry

Key Themes

Throughout the course, you’ll explore how physical activity, sport and exercise can improve lives across different populations and health contexts. You’ll examine the impact of sport and physical activity on population health, learning how to design and implement effective interventions that support prevention, recovery and long-term wellbeing.

You’ll study the role of exercise in managing non-communicable diseases and long-term health conditions, with a focus on public health and health promotion strategies. Then as you progress, you’ll gain the skills to prescribe exercise and support behaviour change in a variety of settings – from clinical and rehabilitative environments to schools, workplaces and communities.

You’ll also explore how to optimise wellbeing across the lifespan. By developing your critical thinking and research skills, you’ll learn how to evaluate, design and deliver physical activity programmes that make a measurable difference to individual and public health.

Course-Level Support

You’ll be supported in your learning journey towards highly skilled, graduate-level employment through a number of key areas. These include:

  • course and module leaders
  • a named academic adviser
  • student support and employability advisers
  • access to our Skills Centre for one-to-one advice, webinars and learning resources
  • central services such as counselling, Library and IT support

Applied learning

Work Placements

A sandwich placement is recognised as the ‘gold standard’ opportunity to apply your knowledge in industry. You’ll be supported and encouraged to complete a full-time placement between your second and third years – gaining professional experience, growing your confidence, and graduating with an Applied Professional Diploma.

You’ll also undertake a mandatory short placement (a minimum of 120 hours) at the end of your second year of study – another valuable opportunity to learn through work experience.

Field Trips

Field trips give you the chance to apply your learning in real-world environments and understand how your skills translate to professional settings. Past trips have included visits to the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre and partner health organisations.

Networking Opportunities

Employers and industry partners play a key role in the course and curriculum design. You’ll build your network through real-world projects, guest lectures, careers fairs and employer-led workshops. Our ties with sport, health and public sector organisations also provide excellent chances for you to gain insights and connections throughout your degree.
