PGCE route into teaching

If you already have a degree, our postgraduate courses could help you train to become a teacher in just one or two years.

Our PGCE courses embed teaching fundamentals while giving you significant experience in a school, college or early years setting. By choosing this route you can qualify to teach in early years, primary, secondary or post-16 levels.

Apply for a PGCE

To do a PGCE, you’ll need an undergraduate degree. Ideally, this will be in the subject you intend to teach.

To apply for one of our PGCE courses, visit the Department for Education (DfE) Apply webpage.

Selection events

After you apply, we might invite you to attend a selection event. These help us understand whether you are likely to succeed on your course. They also help you to decide whether you want to study at Sheffield Hallam.

Subject knowledge enhancement (SKE)

If you don't meet the criteria to teach the subject you want at secondary school, you can study a subject knowledge enhancement course.

Many of these courses are fully funded through the Department of Education. You could also be eligible for a bursary while you study.
