Active Wait: enabling people awaiting hip and knee replacement surgery to remain active

Project start: 01/06/2022

Project end:30/11/2023

There is an urgent need to support people waiting for elective hip and knee replacement surgery in Sheffield. The Covid-19 pandemic created an unprecedented challenge to health services causing increased waiting times for elective orthopaedic surgery.

Active Wait is a research project developed in collaboration with the Musculoskeletal Care Group at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust which aims to enable people awaiting hip or knee replacement surgery to remain active and feel prepared.

A digital resource which includes a 12-week programme of helpful information plus an exercise programme has been co-created with user groups, clinicians, researchers and healthcare students. The programme includes advice on nutrition, sleep, activity, local services and how to prepare for surgery. There is a video-guided exercise programme designed to improve strength and mobility of the hip and knee joints.

The resource is available on the Sheffield Aches and Pains website and will be shared with individuals currently on the waiting list for hip or knee replacement surgery.

There will be a one-to-one health coaching programme offered to people on the waiting list who indicate that they may benefit this type of approach to their care. A team of clinicians and researchers from the Musculoskeletal Care Group and the AWRC will complete specialist training in health coaching and deliver individualised support to 30 patients.

The impact of the digital and health coach programmes will be evaluated through self-report surveys and interviews with patients. We will use the findings of the study to inform the future care of people awaiting hip or knee replacement surgery.
