We want you to have a great experience overseas. This includes keeping safe while travelling and staying in your host country.

Before you go

  • Research the potential risks and the local customs of where you’ll be staying.
  • Let your company or host university know of any health issues, including a disability, which could affect you during your time abroad.
  • Use accommodation providers you know and trust.
  • Complete a risk assessment to consider what arrangements could help you minimise potential risks. We’ll send this to you to fill in.
  • Ensure your vaccinations are up to date
  • Check the FCO travel advice for your destination, and take all necessary precautions to minimise risks.
  • Make a list of important numbers and contact details, including:
    • Sheffield Hallam University • your host institution • the British Embassy in your host country • your insurance company • your bank

When you get there

  • Find out the local emergency numbers and the address of the nearest hospital.
  • Don’t have your valuables on display.
  • Don’t venture into areas you’re not familiar with at night.
  • Make sure you know how to get back to where you’re staying on public transport. If walking, plan a safe route.
  • If you’re returning home late at night or on your own then think about whether a taxi would be the safest option.
  • Understand the drinking laws and be responsible.
  • Make sure all appliances in your accommodation are safe, including boilers and gas appliances.
