🔄 DBS Update Service – What It Is
The Update Service allows your DBS certificate to be transferable, meaning other organisations can check it online.
You can use your certificate to enrol rather than completing a new check if it fits the below criteria. Please note, update service checks must take place in person, so distance learners may find it easier to complete a new application.
📄 Already Have a DBS Certificate?
In order to use a DBS that you already have, you will need to be paying an annual subscription fee and still have access to the physical certificate. You will need to attend a face to face check with the certificate at one of our drop in sessions. You may be able to use your existing DBS to enrol instead of applying for a new one, if:
- Education courses: Your certificate must be Enhanced Child with Child Barred List. This would show 'none recorded' under the Child Barred box, not 'none requested'.
- Health courses: Your certificate must be Enhanced Child & Adult with Child and Adult Barred List. This would show 'none recorded' under the Child Barred box and Adult Barred box, not 'none requested'.
📍 You’ll need to attend a face-to-face check with your certificate and photo ID so we can run an update service check.

💷 Adding Your DBS to the Update Service
- Once you receive your DBS certificate, you'll be able to add it to the update service.
- Cost: £16 per year (not covered by the university)
- You must subscribe within 30 days of your certificate being issued
- Whilst this is not mandatory, we strongly advise you do this to allow placement areas to check your DBS throughout the duration of your course.
