Support for students studying overseas

Whether through personal choice, distance learning, and international placement, or whether you have been unable to return to study in the UK due to travel restrictions/ disruptions, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic means that more Sheffield Hallam University students than ever are currently engaging with their studies whilst based overseas. Your health, safety and wellbeing during this time are the University’s highest priority and we are committed to supporting all our overseas students as we go through this crisis.

The Student Wellbeing Service can offer short-term Wellbeing Support Appointments to students based overseas. Delivered by our professionally qualified Wellbeing Practitioners, Wellbeing Support Appointments can provide an opportunity for students to discuss their current emotional wellbeing needs and to receive targeted advice, guidance and strategies to help alleviate common mental health challenges and to improve levels of wellbeing.

We understand that finding the information and help you need and feeling part of a supportive community are important right now. It’s important to stay in contact with your Student Support Adviser and Academic Adviser to discuss your situation and explore what academic support measures can be put in place for you.

As with students based within the UK, our core advice is that you contact your local private or public medical Doctor and/or emergency medical service if you have concerns about your mental health or if you feel you require urgent support.  In addition, below you will find details of support and crisis support services based outside of the UK:

Befrienders Worldwide gives you details of helplines by country.

Suicide.Org has details of crisis supports services in most countries (listed alphabetically).

Therapy route provides information  about helplines, suicide prevention hotlines, and crisis lines from around the world (countries listed alphabetically)

Chaplaincy and Spiritual Wellbeing

For many of our students being and staying well isn’t just about physical or mental health, it also includes our spiritual health.  With 12 advisors from a range of faiths and backgrounds the chaplaincy team offers 1-1 online conversations to all our students. Find out more.
