Anxiety

Mental health-related anxiety around work placements can be very impactful for all involved.  Anxiety can include persistent feelings of worry, nervousness, or fear, specifically related to one’s job or work environment. It can affect an individual’s ability to perform tasks, make decisions, communicate effectively, and maintain healthy working relationships.  Addressing an individual’s placement-related anxiety in adequate time can alleviate many concerns.  Here are some adjustments that could be considered:

  • Pre-planning, information in advance, what the day will entail or expectations.
  • A quiet place or break out room (if appropriate and available) for a short period of time.
  • Working with a smaller number of staff initially to build familiarity.
  • A word or gesture to indicate if feeling overwhelmed and actions need to be taken.
  • Orientation process (pre visit).
