Case Study 2

This is an example of adjustments in practice, which could help contextualise some of the suggested adjustments included in the resource.

Laura is autistic, has ADHD and experiences auditory processing difficulties. Before Laura started her placement, she made the relevant teams aware of her disabilities. She explained that she can struggle to process verbal information when in meetings and in 1:1 situations. Laura requested any verbal information conveyed to her to be followed up via an email, or that additional time is allocated to allow Laura to write down any verbal instructions or information.

Laura can also struggle in open plan office environments, due to the noise and sensory overwhelm, leading to occasional autistic meltdowns. She requested access to a smaller office or a meeting room she could book out for times when she needed a break from the larger open plan office. She wears noise cancelling headphones and requested to use these at her desk as well.

Laura can struggle with uncertainty and the unknown, she was worried about getting lost travelling to the placement on her first day. Laura decided to do a “practice run” of the journey, prior to her starting her placement, so that she could feel more confident on her first day. The placement provider was able to accommodate Laura’s requests and as a result, Laura completed her placement successfully.
