Before the placement

Having a discussion about support before placement is a good idea.  Everyone’s support needs are different.  Being proactive can reduce anxiety, make it easier to settle into a placement, demonstrate self-awareness and professionalism and encourage independence while knowing that support is there. You may want to arrange a discussion to look at the following reasonable adjustments:

  • A schedule of placement activities in advance.

  • Pre-placement visit to build familiarity of the travel route, the placement location and external/internal environment. (this could be independently or with a placement provider)

  • Flexibility to allow for absences due to disability. It may help to have some ‘reserve days’ built into placements from the outset. Minimum attendance requirements, policies and procedures will still apply.

  • Minimizing travel between working locations during the day.

  • A secure accessible location to access and store medication/ergonomic/other equipment.

  • Proximity and/or consistency of locations where possible, for example to support a physical disability, visual impairment, autism or anxiety.  Please be aware this may not be possible or may be very restricted.

  • Arranging a quiet space for breaks or for working in.
