Mobility and motor skills

Mobility difficulties refer to challenges a person may have with moving their body from one place to another, including walking, standing, sitting, or using stairs. Motor skill difficulties involve problems with coordinating and controlling movements of the body. They are generally divided into: Gross motor difficulties – affect large body movements such as crawling, walking, jumping, balancing and Fine motor difficulties – affect smaller, precise movements like writing, buttoning a shirt, or using utensils. Having a discussion about mitigation of potential barriers is recommended before the placement starts.  Adjustments can include:

  • Areas with more space/fewer obstacles.

  • Standing, sitting, changing positions or moving around to help manage pain. 

  • Assistance with lifting or carrying objects or manual handling.  

  • Using equipment safely, including opportunities to practise handling equipment.

  • Ergonomic equipment that may be required, e.g. access to an adjustable chair. 

  • Access to different areas e.g. staff room, waiting rooms etc.  

  • Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) in the event of an emergency.

  • Accessible venues, ground floor locations or lift access.

  • Proximity and/or consistency of locations where possible.
