Fatigue

Disability related fatigue refers to a state of physical, mental, or emotional exhaustion that reduces a person's ability to perform their job effectively and safely. Key Characteristics can include: decreased energy and motivation to complete tasks, reduced concentration and slower reaction times, impaired decision-making and memory and physical symptoms, such as muscle weakness, headaches, or sleepiness. Discussing an individual's specific difficulties relating to fatigue will support a successful placement experience.  Here are some adjustments that could be considered:

  • Flexibility of tasks at different times of the day to match energy levels.
  • Short breaks to manage fatigue.
  • Quiet space to take breaks.
  • Pacing and managing workload, perhaps set as a learning objective.
  • A notebook or laptop to write things down.
  • Instructions or information repeated wherever possible.
