Communication -  including Deaf support

Communication skills can be essential in a placement situation.  Good communication can allow you to work effectively with others, understand expectations, ask questions, show professionalism, solve problems and share ideas, and, most importantly, learn and develop. The following adjustments may need to be discussed to achieve a successful placement experience:

  • A recording device to record ideas (when local policies around confidentiality allow).
  • Prompt sheets to help with specific tasks.
  • A combination of verbal and written information/feedback.
  • British Sign Language (BSL) interpreters.
  • A note taker (for deaf students).
  • Communication strategies that aid lip reading.
  • Use of hearing devices (wearing a radio microphone).
  • Extra time to complete assessments, (due to difficulties writing and listening at the same time).
  • A quiet space when communicating – busy or noisy environments might be overwhelming and distracting for hearing aid users.
  • Access to Assistive Technology.
  • Time to build up relationships and feel comfortable in a group.
  • Clear instructions, simple, and concise.
